Tackle Today: Buy the Dip is Dead

October 3, 2022

«Selling begets more selling.»

Traders,

The Wall Street Journal had an article out recently that took a fascinating look at how to measure the effectiveness of buying the dip. They measured the average performance of the S&P 500 in the week following a one-day loss of at least 1%. In a bull market where buy-the-dip reigns, markets tend to rebound after such a dip.

But not this year.

The inability to snap back makes 2022 the worst year since the early 1930s, nearly a century ago! Selling has begat more selling, and the rubber band has lost its stretchiness.

It won’t last forever, but consider this another reason why whatever strategies you’ve used in recent years aren’t working so well in 2022.
