Tackle Today: Dividends Pay You Cash

«Dividends = your cut of the profits.»

Traders,

When you buy stocks, you are purchasing equity in a public company. You become a shareholder or part owner and thus share in the company’s growth. The monetary benefits come to you in two forms: price appreciation & dividends.

The first is obvious. If you purchased shares when they were trading for $10, and the company goes on to grow its share price to $20, then you double your money! Rising share prices create capital gains.

The second is more hidden. Many public companies distribute a portion of their profits to shareholders. In the old days, these would come as checks in the mail. Now, they’re done electronically and deposited directly into your bank account.

For instance, Verizon currently pays shareholders a quarterly dividend of 65 cents. Annually that works out to $2.60 for every share owned. You can use the cash to pay your bills, buy a hamburger, or reinvest in Verizon or other stocks.

Dividends play a crucial role in the long-term returns of the stock market.
