Tackle Today: Fed Meeting on Tap

July 27, 2022

By | No Comments

«Prepare for a three-quarter point rate hike.»

Traders,

The esteemed Fed governors gather today to announce their next interest rate decision. Let’s recap the current environment and market expectations so you have the proper perspective heading into it.

① First, the current target range for the Fed Funds rate is 1.50% to 1.75%.

② Second, as of Tuesday’s close, the market is pricing in a 75% chance that the Fed will hike rates by 75 basis points. That will lift the range to 2.25% – 2.50% (see Chart of the day below).

③ Third, the rate hike has already been discounted in bond yields. To wit, the 2-month T-bill is trading with a yield of 2.35%, and the 3-month T-bill has a yield of 2.55%. Expect the usual amount of volatility surrounding the event. Stock prices sit at a critical juncture, with the S&P 500 testing the top side of the 50-day moving average.
