The Federal Reserve is in a war against inflation, and its favorite weapon is raising interest rates. You can track the direct impact of their campaign via mortgage rates and bond yields. While yields did pause briefly at the beginning of October, they’re back to zipping higher.
Indeed, this week the ascent accelerated. The 2-year yield just topped 4.6%. The 10-year isn’t far behind at 4.24%. Talk of 5% is now making the rounds.
The poor mortgage market is in an even greater state of shock, with the 30-year mortgage rate eclipsing 7.3% this week. It’s a horror show with loads of implications for the housing market. None of them are good. As for stocks, it’s hard for a rally to stick with the uptrend in interest rates gaining steam again. Boo.
