Tackle Today: The S&P 500 Changes over Time

March 30, 2021

Want to ensure you always own the best?

Traders,

The S&P 500 Index was created in 1926, nearly a century ago. Its first iteration included 90 stocks but was later expanded to 500 in 1957. However, it wasn’t until 1976 that individual investors could purchase a mutual fund that tracked it (thanks to Vanguard).

Do you know one reason why the S&P 500 has such a solid track record of rising over time? Because the committee in charge of the Index gradually changes its composition. Guess how many companies have been removed from the S&P 500 since 1980 due to distress.

10? 50? 100?

Actually, it’s over 400!

The creative destruction of the global economy has resulted in hundreds of once-thriving companies being removed from the S&P 500 index. Because of the frequency of changes, the Index is guaranteed never to become outdated or full of has-beens.
