Now that we’re one year past the fastest bear market in history, market analysts are releasing all sorts of charts showing just how epic the snapback has been. Our Chart of the Day below is one such graphic. The S&P 500 has now risen 76% off the lows making this the 3rd largest jump in a century.
To discover the last two, you must go back to the Great Depression in the 1930s. One commonality among all the largest historic rallies is that they all follow massive crashes.
There’s a lesson in this. The initial phase of a new bull market usually has a trajectory that matches the last stage of the preceding bear. This is the singular exception of the conventional wisdom that stocks take the stairs up and the elevator down.
It also illustrates why it’s such a bad idea to abandon your long-term holdings in the depths of a crash. Not only are you locking in a significant drawdown, but you’re also guaranteeing you miss out on what should be the most epic part of the inevitable recovery.
Let’s all take a moment of silence for the mountains of cash that were unnecessarily lit on fire by those who panicked last March. Those Nervous Nellies just missed out on the comeback of a lifetime.
