Tackle Today: We All Need to Be Dancers

Match the Rhythm

Traders,

If your anything like me then dancing is not an option.  Being born with two left feet made that an easy thing to recognize in my case.  Now there are those that just seem to be born able to match the rhythm of the music and they are able to move with a certain fluidity that seems almost natural.  There is another reality, that those who seem to move with this natural fluidity have in fact cultivated this skill over years of practice, experience and education.   I have a couple of what I deem to be odd examples but I believe this will illustrate my point here.

I remember watching a video way back in 1999 and I thought it was the most processed thing I had seen to that point.  The dancing in this video was very scripted and although it was well executed it seemed somewhat robotic in nature, of course that is just my opinion.  The video in question was “baby one more time” by Brittney Spears.  I remember thinking at the time that Ms. Spears was just some made up pop star kinda like many others at that time.  Imagine my surprise when I later learned that Brittney started dancing at age 3 and was trained throughout most of her young life.  She indeed learned to match the rhythm.  The second example comes from another pop star that does indeed rhythm or so I am told and that would Justin Timberlake.  I again have seen a few videos of Justin and he appears to have a very good grasp of matching the rhythm.  The videos again seem very choregraphed and having seen it for the first time it looked very mechanical.  After learning more about Mr. Timberlake, it seemed he was performing as early as age 11 and learning about rhythm from his many musical family influences.

I think you can see that it is indeed possible to learn to match the rhythm with great precision if one chooses to do so and puts the effort behind it.  This leads us to our role in trading. It is our job in trading to match the rhythm of the markets and our portfolio as well.  If the market rhythm is volatile up and down movement like we are currently seeing then it is up to us to do our best to match that rhythm and make sure that our portfolio and trades emulate these conditions.  If you don’t know how to do this then this is your opportunity to learn to match the rhythm of the markets.

To learn to match the rhythm we must learn how to adjust our posture in the markets.  To adjust that posture we need to understand the market cycles and the timing of the market swings.  This is not an easy task and takes dedication but it is a learnable skill just like dancing.
