≈ Stop fighting for the scraps. ≈
When we are kids we are told to do well in school so we can go to college. When we are in college we are told to graduate so we can get a good job. At our jobs, we are told that if we work hard, we will be rewarded with raises and promotions. In reality, some employers do not even go through the motions to tell us those nice words. The message some employees hear is that they should be grateful they even have a job. Many employers emphasize that employees will be fired if they do not work hard.
In this uplifting environment, individuals work hard to attempt to receive pay increases and promotions. Disappointment and heartache set in when they do not receive that promotion or pay raise. Exuberance sets in when they are given a 6-7% annual pay raise. Get ready to break out the party hats if the promotion comes through and an individual receives a 10-15% raise based on the promotion.
It seems ridiculous when you put it into context, but most people get excited when:
- Someone else determines their perceived worth.
- Someone else determines that their worth should be increased a few percentage points.
A line from the movie Braveheart seems applicable here:
“You’re so concerned with squabbling for the scraps from Longshank’s table that you’ve missed your God-given right to something better!”
We all need to stop fighting for the scraps and seek out something better. There are many ways to start this process but if you need a little push in the right direction, start with determining what your worth and value is, and not relying on others to determine it for you.
