The Q1 Trading Justice Newsletter is hot off the press, and it’s titled Investing & Taxes. The message’s objective is to teach you how taxes on your trading work in plain English. It’s divided into three sections: account types, capital gains, and dividends.

Here’s a primer on each:

Account types: There are several account types you can invest in, but they fall under one of three buckets: taxable, tax-deferred, and tax-free. The first one delivers a 1099 yearly detailing your capital gains, dividends, and interest received. The second one doesn’t require paying taxes until later in life. The third never requires it.

Capital gains: A capital gain is taxable in the year it was realized. If you buy a stock for $100 and later sell it for a higher price, say $110, you realize a capital gain. If you held the investment for less than one year, it’s a short-term capital gain. If you held it for more than one year, it’s a long-term capital gain.

Dividends: This is cash income paid out to shareholders. It’s usually paid quarterly. There are qualified and non-qualified dividends. The qualified dividends receive favorable tax treatment.
