Making money comes down to a single formula.

Sum of winners > sum of losers

No matter how simple or complex your trading system, it all comes down to this. Did you make more on your income trades than you lost on your expense trades? If so, congratulations, you have profits. If not, well, then you have some things to figure out, don’t you? The phrase “maximize gains, minimize losses” is repeated so often because it is how you get to where the above formula works for you.

How’s this for obvious? If your winners’ sum isn’t greater than the sum of your losers, it’s because your average gain is too low and your average loss too high. If you’re not calculating these, then you should be. The Tackle Trading Journal does it for you automatically. Use it. Track your results. Focus on improving your metrics, and the profits will come.
