≈ The Retirement Question≈
Your financial situation in retirement boils down to one question: will you outlive your money, or will your money outlive you? Unfortunately, most people don’t know the answer – partly because they’re unaware that it’s THE ultimate question. And partly because they don’t have the know-how to discover the answer even if they are aware of it.
At the average inflation rate of 3%, the cost of living will more than double over a thirty-year retirement. In other words, what costs $1 in year one, will cost upwards of $2.40 in year 30. This harsh reality demands you have a plan for increasing your income. The alternative is you simply run out of money.
Many investors look to the stock market as a potential solution. For the past half-century, the dividends or cash income of the S&P 500 has increased at nearly twice the rate of inflation. Shareholders of these, the largest, most well-capitalized, and well-run companies on the planet, have benefited from this.
To be clear – patient stock investors holding equities for decades have seen their incomes grow well beyond the inflation rate.
