Tackle Today: “E” is for Entry

September 20, 2021

Pull the Trigger. ≈

If you want to travel north, do you jump on a southbound train? Not if you desire to get there in a direct and timely fashion. The same goes for trading. If you’re purchasing a stock in hopes that it rises in value, it’s better to enter when prices are already moving in the right direction.

Traders call this confirmation.

The “E” in our S.T.E.P. System stands for entry. As in, when do we enter or pull the trigger on a trade? Where you place the entry depends in large part on the underlying chart pattern. For a bullish breakout, we often put the entry above resistance. That way, the stock has to prove itself by breaching the ceiling before we climb aboard.

For bullish retracements where an uptrend has retreated to support, a typical entry technique is to buy above the previous day’s high. Remember, down, down, down is not support. Down, down, up is support. We need the upward movement in price to confirm.

The opposite is true for bearish retracements where a downtrend has rallied to resistance. In these cases, we usually sell short below the previous day’s low.

Our S.T.E.P. Swing Trading System methodically walks through each primary charting pattern and helps you understand the logic and logistics of proper entry placement.
