Traders,

The more individual stock positions you have, the more likely you are to come across bad news. The same applies to good news, but the point is you can’t be an active trader carrying loads of positions without stumbling across the occasional news-inspired rug pull.

I had just such an unwelcome episode happen yesterday with Disney after the company warned of lower Q4 growth expectations for their Disney+ streaming service. I remain a long-term bull, undeterred by the news, but the market rapidly lopped 4% off its share price, bringing pain to my short put.

What a shame.

Fortunately, I’m a man with a plan. First, my size was small enough to minimize the damage. Three cheers for proper position sizing! Second, I’m able to add contracts when the time is ripe to speed up the recovery.

Instead of hoping you never experience bad news, build a plan for dealing with it.
