Yesterday on our Trading Justice Podcast, I sat down and discussed the history of retirement accounts in the US with coach Matt and Mark. When you study the history, it is fascinating to think about how the concept of retirement has evolved over the years.
There are 4 main players to examine in the conversation about the evolution of retirement:
- Government
- Corporations
- Wall Street
- Individuals
Through the years, each of these 4 groups play a significant role in the shaping of retirement account and retirement planning. Governments have best intentions, corporations negotiate with labor, Wall Street just wants its money and Individuals must make decisions the best they can based on their situation and financial needs.
When thinking about this topic from the big picture view, it is important to examine all the players involved. When making decisions about your own personal retirement account planning, the most important player is you.
Financial education is for more than just short-term decision making. It does involve short term, but it also involves long term planning. Getting setup with the right types of accounts and building an investment thesis that fits your abilities and will allow you to reach your goals is what really matters.
Give the podcast a listen if you are interested in learning about how retirement has evolved over the years. And make a commitment to building a plan for your own accounts where you are in control, set proper expectations and will put you on the right track.
